Glenanne Youths Mission Statement
Glenanne Youths Section embraces the concepts of a secure, honest and supportive sports environment for young boys and girls aged between 6 and 16 years old. Players are encouraged to see sport as an integral part of a balanced healthy lifestyle. This is achieved by developing a deep interest in team sports through which camaraderie and hopefully long lasting friendships are made. Glenanne coaches strive to provide a high standard of coaching to develop the core skills of hockey whilst at the same time developing a healthy competitive spirit for hockey and still providing a fun and challenging experience for each individual player.

What does a typical training session involve?
Typical Training for New Starters ~ U8’s
At this age group, typically boys and girls want to be part of small groups and it’s important to ensure that each player is linked to the group otherwise they tend not to enjoy the training and will stop playing hockey.
One of the key objectives that the U8 coaches have is to ensure that the social aspect of the game is maintained at all times. The training has to be seen as an hour of playing and having fun.
How do U8’s learn to play hockey?
o Through playing and having fun playing (practices and games are self-learning)
o Other non-hockey activities without a ball or stick that encourages coordination.
o Lots of repetition – playing the same or similar games each week so the players can learn and improve the skills.
Typical session for our youngest hockey players
Stage 1: 15 minutes of warm up games
Stage 2: 15 min of playing/ learning practices.
Stage 3: 15mins of games. In this stage the young players practice the skills of the previous stage
Stage 4: Finishing the session with slow exercise and fun games and time to socialise with new friends.

Parent Involvement
Glenanne actively encourages the involvement of all parents/guardians at training and matches. Please understand that you do not have to be an expert hockey player or in fact a hockey player at all to get involved. Experience and different skillsets from parents are always welcomed! Our coaches will be delighted to show you the ropes and get you involved.
