The ladies 3rds got off to a great preseason winning both friendly matches. The team has welcomed 5 new players this season, Louise, Lynda, Danielle, Lucy and Michelle and is now under the experienced coaching team of Alice and Dee, with captain me (Niamh) and new vice-captain Katie Keogh.
The first game of the league saw the girls take on Corinthians with plenty of preparation time (2 hours due to a bit of confusion over the starting time!!). The game finally got under way with Corinthians coming out strong, but the Glens solid defence of Nuala, Fiona, Niamh and Grainne and goalie Aoife held them at bay. The Glens had very few chances in the first half and the second half started 0-0. Finally a terrific pass down the left wing was taken by Emma who off loaded to Karen at the top of the D who made no mistake in striking the ball into the back of the net giving the Glens a 1-0 lead. Corinthians fought back but the glens defence stood strong leaving the score 1-0 at the final whistle, player of the match went to Fiona Hanaphy who played outstandingly after taking a year out to have her second baby, welcome back Fiona. The next Saturday saw the 3rds take on an Avoca team who have just been promoted from Division 11, reports are that the Avoca team were superb and the result showed with the Glens losing 4-0. I unfortunatly wasn't at this match so can't report much more. So that brings us to this week another away match this time against Loreto. This was one match I wished I was on the pitch for, watching from the sidelines is defintly no fun!! The loreto girls were very physical from the start and our first casulaty came when Karen went over on a loreto stick resulting on her ankle swelling up like a ballon, later reports confirmed ligament damage, get well soon Karen you can join me on the side line until your better!! Then not 5 minutes later Niamh McCarthy was taken out at the top of the D but after taking a sort break on the sideline she managed to get back on and score a terrific goal leaving the first half 1-0 with the Glens ahead. Loreto starting fighting back in the second half but yet again the Glens defence were outstanding. Glenanne got a short corner half way throught the second half and a terrific strike from Jo saw the girls go 2-0 ahead. The match ended with a 2-0 result to the Glenanne Ladies, player of the match although it could of gone to anyone as the whole team played great, went to Joanne Maher who had an outstanding game playing a position she had never played before - left back. Jo it looked like you had been playing there for years! Well done girls your Captain is proud 6 from 9 points good work so far, I can't wait to be back playing but I suppose I'll have to settle for screaming from the sidelines for the next few weeks or to be more exact T-8 weeks and counting!!!! Also a special congrats must go to our old team mate Siobhan Leonard who gave birth to her first baby daughter Anna on Saturday, well done Siobhan. Till next week Captain Niamh B. |
