Ladies 1st Win Against Pembroke

Ladies 1st -v- Pembroke 14/11/09

This weekend was a repeat of last weekend for the ladies 1st as they took on Pembroke this time in the league. The girls with no win under their belt so far this season started off well with both teams looking evenly matched but the Glens got caught off gaurd and out of position after a good attack was well defended by Pembroke.  The Pembroke Ladies took advantage of this and stormed off down the pitch to score an easy goal.  The rest of the first half can only be described as frustrating, the Glens got 3 short corners in a row with no luck. Then another 2 short corners came for the Glens but nothing seemed to be working until finally in the dying minutes of the first half the girls got a short corner, this time the strike from Kate was saved by the goalie but Fitz got the rebound only for it to be saved again, but the girls didn’t give up and Marie got the rebound and passed to Derbhla who finally ended 35 minutes of frustration with a goal, half time score 1-1.

The second half began and the Glens seemed to come out with fighting spirit and as the left back would say some fabulous passing!!! It also signalled lots of cards, Yellow for Pembroke, Green for Glenanne, Yellow Glenanne and one more a Yellow for Pembroke resulting in the Pembroke team losing a player.  Pembroke came close to scoring from a short corner but Ciara stopped them with a lovely clear. The Glens then got a lovely goal, not quite sure how it happened but from a unbelievable angle Ciara managed a lovely strike and got the ball passed the keeper, score 2-1 to the Glens all they had to do now was get through the final minutes but Pembroke were not about to give up and in the dying minutes secured a final chance winning a short corner just as the final whistle went. Pembroke took the short corner and a foul by Glenanne resulted in another short for Pembroke, Susan made a terrific save only to have the ball come straight back at her this time in the air, but no fear she deftly saved it with her stick, ball goes out of play and its all over final score 2-1 and at last the girls get the win they deserved. Well done to Derbhla who got player of the match and to the rest of the team on a great win.

Ladies 2nds win first round of IJC

Ladies 2nds Beat Hermes in first round of IJC

The ladies 2nds took on Hermes in St Andrews with Hermes playing in division 2 the Glens were underdogs from the start.  However this did not deter them and from the start they showed skill and determination, their hardwork paid off in the first half when Captain Siobhan scored from a short corner putting the girls 1-0 ahead starting the second half. Not once during the match did the Glens look like they played 2 divisions below the Hermes side and their hard work paid off with another goal giving them a 2-0 lead. However the Hermes side managed to get one back, but at last to the relief of the supporters the final whistle went putting the girls through to the second round of the Irish Junior Cup. Well done girls.

New Ladies Competition

Manager of the Month

Well the heat is on - the ladies section managers are having a competition of their own.  Those lovely ladies who do so much for us throughout the season Barbara, Nuala and Deirdre are now competing for Manager of the Month.  Much like the league for every win their team gets they will get 3 points, a draw is 1 point and if their team loses they get a big fat 0.  Now with the promise of a trophy for the winner you can be sure things are going to get interesting! The first month October went to new manager Deirdre Leonard who out did the years of experience of both O'Malley and Shaw. But a new month is upon us and with both Shaw and O'Malley getting 3 points each this weekend and Leonard not yet off the mark due to a free weekend for her team this month is sure to get interesting. Watch this space.........
