James Connolly the hero
On a day when hockey matches all over the country were cancelled or abandoned it was well done to Glenanne Park which stood up to four games. Only Niamh Byrne’s thirds failed to make it to the starting blocks as their joist at dawn had to be called off. After the women’s first’s fine win over Bray (see report on Findlater blog including photo of Zane’s Niamh) we saw the fourths finish with a flourish and Can-can notch a final ten minute hat trick to beat SBPP 6-2. Young Keppel, young Williamson and the long haired Eoghan Lynch also scored. The curtain raisers were all over and it was time for the match of the day. With more or less the same team as they had in the corresponding fixture in 1983 Tobin felt that the Young men did not look as young as their name might indicate. The fans were treated to an exciting clash with the Glens winning by the odd goal in five. Brian Reade put the home team in front just before half time. Y driven on by thirty plus capped Tom Jenkinson put on big pressure after the restart and were rewarded with a blockbuster goal nine minutes in. A fine move involving O’Regan and young Williamson ended with Reade getting his second goal. Y charged back and had many chances before they secured an equaliser with twelve minutes on the clock. It looked all over a draw until with four to go up popped James Connolly to snatch the winner. It was his first ever goal after six years playing hockey. Well done to umpires Robin Powderly and Timothy Lyne. |
