A short preview of this weekend's upcoming action...

Men’s 1st team

Opposition: Three Rock Rovers

Venue: Grange Road

Time: 14.00

Glenanne form: WWWWL

A terrific six-point weekend for the lads left them top of the league on Sunday but they face a Three Rock side that have not lost in the league since before Christmas and recently turned over title-challenging Monkstown. Joe Brennan and Filip Jaros remain on the long-term injury list but the lads looked in good shape last weekend and will be hoping to stay top of the pile after Saturday’s tie.

Ladies 1st team

Opposition: Hermes

Venue: St Andrews College

Time: 15.45

Glenanne form: LWLLL

The girls are sure to have a massive say in the title race over the next two weeks as they face Hermes and UCD in consecutive ties. That will form part of the fine-tuning process before they face more important ties against Three Rock and Trinity but they will relish the chance to make a difference at the other end of the table.

Ladies 2nd team **GAME OF THE WEEK**

Opposition: Suttonians

Venue: Glenanne Park

Time: 13.00

Glenanne form: DWLWW

Opportunity knocks for the ladies second team as they face one of their two title rivals on Saturday in Glenanne Park. A win will leave them six points ahead of the Sutton side with three games remaining, while also maintaining at least a three-point buffer over YMCA. Suttonians look to be the side to beat as well having won their last four games; including an impressive 4-1 win over YM last Saturday.

Men’s 3rd team

Opposition: Railway Union

Venue: Glenanne Park

Time: 11.00

Glenanne form: WLDLW

The men’s third team are probably the most inconsistent team in the club so who knows what we will get on Saturday morning. The last few weeks have seen a trouncing by Monkstown followed by an impressive win over Clontarf. The good news for Zane’s side is that after the weekend they play three teams in title contention, so they at least have a chance to ruffle a few feathers in the last few weeks of the season.

Ladies 3rd team

Opposition: Guinness

Venue: Iveagh Grounds

Time: 10.00

Glenanne form: WWLWL

The Ladies are the talk of the club with their magnificent cup run booking them in to a final against title rivals Our Lady’s on April 15th, but now it is time to get back to basics. They are engrossed in a lively title battle with the aforementioned and North Kildare, with Loreto and Trinity also dark horses. After an impressive 5-1 dismantling of Trinity last night, a win against bottom club Guinness should lead them nicely in to a pivotal match against Our Lady’s on Saturday week at the summit of the table.

Men’s 4th team (FRIDAY)

Opposition: Athy

Venue: North Kildare, Kilcock

Time: 20.15

Glenanne form: WWLLL

The 4ths have little to play for except picking up the few wins they need to guarantee they do not get relegated but Friday night’s tie offers them a chance to have an effect on the promotion race in Division 6. They ran the Kildare side close in their cup tie in January but their opposition were missing players. Athy need to win to maintain their push for a second consecutive promotion as Fingal are waiting in the wings for any slip ups.

Ladies thirds remain top of division 10. Ladies top goal scorer Sinead Aherne is stretching her lead with a hat trick at the weekend...

The ladies thirds faced off against North Kildare the first weekend in February, in what was always going to be a vocal encounter. The least said about this match the better, the Glens just did not get into it at all, mind you North Kildare only got one past us in the last 15 minutes and went away as the team to take away our unbeaten record at home. Oh well ya can’t win them all.

So after some serious discussions at training and with that loss well and truly behind us it was out to face Hermes on Saturday. I got to resume my old centre back position, which was nice, and Paula Davis took on the centre midfield position. The game started off 50/50 but it wasn’t long before we got a short corner, slight mess up from the pusher outer (me) but Sinead still managed to get a good shot unfortunately my foot instead of my stick got in the way booooo. Anyway it wasn’t long before we got another one, out to Katie back to Sinead and goal number one. Hermes however were not with out their chances and got their own short corner, but the strike was blocked and the Glens used this to attack. Some good play down the right hand side of the pitch finally got rewarded with Lucy passing the ball to Paula into the circle, Brid and Sinead were both waiting with Sinead getting the final touch to make it 2-0 coming into half time. The second half started with Lucy flying down the right hand side of the pitch, pass to Sinead shot at keeper blocked, but fear not Sinead’s reverse is as good as her open side, through the keepers legs to complete her hat trick. The rest of the game passed by with the only other event being Catherine’s ball is going wide moment-ball was not going wide it hit off the posts but our lovely defence cleared it to keep Catherine with a clean sheet!! Well done girls position at the top of the table resumed with a game in hand.

Match reports against Avoca, Rathgar, YMCA and Alex...

21/1/2012 Avoca- Glenanne Park

The ladies seconds took on Avoca at home. The game was a tough fixture as Avoca were keen not to give anything away. End to end action saw Louise Kennedy and Kate O’Connor stay strong at the back. Young Sarah Daly putting everything she had into the game resulting in her receiving a facial injury while defending a short corner, ending her game. The Glens came close to taking the lead when Lucy Small won a penalty for a bad foul in the circle, but the penalty was put wide. Kate O’Connor sealed the win for the girls in the last minute of the game with the goal coming from a well worked short corner routine.

28/1/2012 Rathgar- The High School

Rathgar was next, the girls determined to get a win here, as Rathgar beat YMCA the previous week which helped the girls secure their top of the table position. From the start of the game the girls put everything into the game, but found it hard to break Rathgars defence. Ten minutes in and the Glens were down Ciara Nugent to another facial injury. Elsa Stewert did well in midfield linking up with the energiser bunny Siobhan Bastable. The Glens had to wait until the second half to find the goal, which came from a super deflection from Rachel Maunsel.

4/2/2012 YMCA – Sandymount

The girls ventured to Sandymount to play YMCA, a clash of the top two in the league, this was always going to be a tough game. The Glens failed to start as normal and ten minutes in found themselves 1-0 down. This seemed to be what was needed to reignite the girls passion. The Glens powered on, Sereena Rush proving she was a force to be reckoned with. The Glens pulled back a goal in the second half from level headed Kate O’Connor from another short corner, levelling the pair. The game got quite heated neither team wanting to give away the ball easy, which lead to the umpires verbally warning players. Late in the second half, keeper Emma Healy twisted her knee, straining ligaments, resulting in Paula Davis putting on the keepers pads. YMCA were awarded a number of short corners in the last quarter of the game, the defence doing well to keep them out. In the last five minutes Kerrie Maunsel received a yellow card and sin binning. YMCAs second goal came from a ball hit into the circle and first timed from the top, finding the back of the goal. The girls were disappointed to have lost the game, their first league defeat but still held there top position, however YMCA had a game in hand and could potentially take the top spot.

11/02/2012 Alex in Glenanne Park

The Glens took on 8th position Alex at home. After a successful morning in Glenanne park the pressure was on for the girls to maintain the Glenannw winning streak. The Glens took their time getting into the game, allowing Alex to play their game. Soon the Glens found their feet again, but were unlucky to not be on the score board before half time. With Maoliosa Nugent, Siobhan Bastable and Kerrie Maunsel dominating midfield. Niamh Ward working tirelessly and being a menace to the Alex defence was proving generous at times choosing to pass rather than take on the Alex keeper.

The Glens waited for the second half to score again, with a well worked corner by Kate O’Connor the short corner specialist. The Glens came close to scoring a number of times and even had a run of five successive short corners in a row, yielding no score.

It is with great sadness that Glenanne Sports Club announces the passing of Mr Bobby Moore, an Honorary Life Member of Glenanne SC

It is with great sadness that Glenanne Sports Club announces the passing of Mr Bobby Moore, an Honorary Life Member of Glenanne SC. Many of our members will have numerous memories of Bobby, former men’s 1st goalkeeper in the late 1960′s & 1970′s, former Chair of the Hockey Committee, former Hon General Secretary & former President (Chairman) of Glenanne SC. Bobby joined Glenanne SC in the early 60′s with his brother Paul & played for the men’s 1sts until the late 70′s & along with a number of members of Glenanne SC in that decade, was dedicated to saving Glenanne SC after losing our grounds in Terenure.

He was involved in the biggest fundraising project ever undertaken by this club in the mid 1980′s to start the building process for our pitch in Glenanne Park & was the illustrious MC at the Glenanne Golf Classics which went on to raise an astonishing amount of money for this club. He presented the Christmas Morning Married’s V Singles medals to many Glenanne men right through to the late 1990′s & his rendition of ‘I’ll take you home again Kathleen’ after Christmas morning in the Leonard’s house was a sight to behold & hear. Within this club, many members will have lots of stories & anecdotes to tell about Bobby, all treasured memories of a truly great Glenanne member.
