Glenanne Hockey Club

Ladies National Indoor Trophy Bid

Group stage weekend December 17/18 2011 and January 10/11 2012

The girls came out of the blocks as much of a surprise to them as to their opponents, beating Clontarf by 7-0, goal from Ciara Nugent x 2, Mary Waldron, Cathy Brock, Audrey MaCormack, Aoife Dalton and Dearbhla Kieran.

The next game of the weekend brought Corinthians, who I think the girls wanted to take revenge on for the previous weekends Jacqui Potter cup defeat. The first goal to be scored against the girls in the tournament was had by Corinthians which came from a penalty stroke awarded for the ball being stopped on the line by a foot. This wasnt enough as the girls beat Corinthians by a whopping 8 goals to 1. Scores from Mary Waldron x3 Audrey McCormack x2, Dearbhla Kieran, Aoife Dalton and Ciara Nugent.

The final game of the weekend brought Avoca to the girls, this being Avoca’s first time in the tournament there was little to go on. The girls found there footing again, and Avoca were no match the girls coming out 8-0 winners, goal scorers, Mary Waldron x3, Audrey McCormack x1 Dearbhla Kieran x2 Paula Fitzpatrick x2.

The next game was to be against Newbridge but they had to pull out in the first weekend as their goalie sustained an injury, as a result of this every team was given the points for winning and given 5 goals.

Hermes were next on the card and after not playing competitively from the 18th of December until the 11th January had the girls a little rusty but they werent long blowing off the cobwebs. The game was very closely fought and came down to the very last minute, but Hermes came out winners by 3 goals to 2. Scorers Mary Waldron, Catherine Murray

This left the girls in second position and through to the next round where they had to play both Ulster Elks and Railway.

Saturday 14/01/2012

Glenanne v Ulster Elks

A virtual unknown to the girls, Elks had qualified from the Ulster group in first position. The game was end to end, with the Glens taking an early lead 2-0 up after 7 minutes. But the Glens let Elks back into it, the end score was 6-6. Scorers Dearbhla Kieran x3 Christine Barretto, Audrey McCormack and Catherine Murray

Glenanne v Railway

Railway qualified form the other Leinster group coming first, so the Glens felt they had another tough game on there hands and were keen to give nothing away. The game was hard fought. The game came down to only one goal in the difference, ending 2-1 to Railway, the Glens goal coming from a penalty awarded for the goalie taking Ciara Nugent out at the top of the circle in a short corner. Scorer Ciara Nugent.

The Glens fate was in the hands of the Railway Elks game, needing railway to beat Elks by two clear goals, the end score of the Railway Elks game was 3-1 to Railway, which meant Glenanne were through to the semi finals.

Semi Final Glenanne v Hermes Sunday 15/01/2012

From the start this game was going good. Hermes started the scoring with a goal from a corner, but the Glens responded quickly with a goal form well worked corner scored by Ciara Nugent. Hermes responded and scored a further two goals, making it 3-1.

The Glens scored from another corner bringing it to 3-2. A tackle in Glenannes half and the ball driven forward and passed off the left board to a waiting Dearbhla Kieran, who slotted the ball under the Hermes Kepper made it 3-3. Hermes got there next 80 seconds from the end after Christine Barretto dove to take the ball off the goal line resulting in a penalty stroke. Everyone thought it was all over excpet the players a well worked ball into the circle to Dearbhla Kieran who reverse flicked the ball into the Hermes goal, brought the score to 4-4 insuring extra time.

Extra time yielded no score, and the Glens felt they should have received a stroke at the end of the first half when Ciara Nugent was taken down by the Hermes goalie while still in  possession of the ball in the circle. Hermes thought they had it in the second half of extra time when there player struck but as they cheered the ball was taken off the line leaving the game 4-4 with penalty strokes to decide the tie in the end.

Hermes won out 2-1 on strokes.

It was evident especially from the semi final that the girls dug deep and played heart and passion. The girls would like to the Eddie O’Malley senior for taking them on, coaching them and enabling them to reach this stage in the competition. They would also like to than Barbara O’Malley for managing the team and much more. To all the supporters who were there all the way not just on the semi final day, the team hopes they did you proud and are determined to go a couple of steps further next year.
