Ladies 2nds IJC game v Cork Harlequins 3/12/2011

Starting out the game on Saturday there were a few changes made to the starting line up. Sarah Daly stepped into the defence and Elsa Stewert pushed up into left midfield. The Glens didnt have the dream start to the match, looking like they werent up for the game. It looked as though the girls were just going through the paces. After 10 mins a defensive error led to a Harlequins player finding themselves one on one with Emma Healy in goal, a well struck ball from the top of the circle found the Goal. This some may have thought would have spurred the girls, but they still seemed to be that one step behind. Some periods of good play, namely the Glens defensive corners, twice the Glens found themselves in the oppositions circle from some quick play. Short corners were won by the Glens but nothing came from it. Harlequins found themselves with another one on one with Keeper Emma Healy, and another well struck ball found the goal, leaving the girls trailing 2-0 at half time.

For the second half  it was as if a different Glenanne team stepped out onto the pitch. From the whistle the girls were determined to come back, a team that resembled the 2nds team of late. Harlequins didn’t quite know how to handle the team.  The forwards worked hard to win corners, which the Glens finally were rewarded with a goal from a great strike from Kate O’Connor. This gave the glens more confidence and they were camped in the Harelquins half for the majority of the second half. Ciara Nugent stepped up from right back into right midfield, linking well with the mids and forwards, stealing to ball from a number of hit outs laying off to Marie Goulding perfectly positioned at the top of the circle. The Glens pushed forward continuing to keep the pressure on, harlequins did well to keep out a number of chances from Rachel Maunsel and a superb revers shot from Maoliosa “Nodie” Nugent which went narrowly wide. Time unfortunalty was not the the Glens side and the match ended 2-1 to Cork Harlequins, ending the Glens junior cup dream.

The seconds are currently topping Division 4 and will no doubt put all of their energy in to keep themselves there. Last league game before the Christmas break next saturday away to loreto, a win will keep them top going into the break.

The 2nds would like to thank Deirdre Leonard and the girls from the thirds for helping and setting up the hall. They would also like to thank Lorraine Kennedy for doing the food, it was lovely. Anyone who was not mentioned, apologies but your efforts were appreciated so thank you.
