Men’s 3rd team get valuable win in Pembroke

The men’s third team kept up their erratic league form as they pulled off a somewhat shock result by beating Pembroke in Sandymount on Saturday.

It means the third team have not lost in Serpentine Avenue since 2009 and was a victory ground out through the virtues of hard work and excellent defending.

Wanderers got off to a flying start and took the lead around the 10th minute when a reverse stick shot squeezed its way into the back of the net.

Stuart Ronan replied midway through the half with an opportunistic effort after a corner rebound had fallen to him at the edge of the circle.

It remained scoreless until the half and the away side’s greater use of the bench began to tell more in the second period.

Tadgh Murphy gave Glens the lead after Ronan stole possession from a Pembroke defender and slipped him in.

Then captain fantastic Zane Cashman got a deft touch on a cross from the right to double the margin.

Pembroke pulled one back with less than ten minutes to go to make it a nervy finish and perhaps should have equalised in the dying moment only for one of their midfielders to strike a reverse stick effort wide.
