Glenanne Hockey Club

Ladies 3rd XI v Guinness 19/11/2011

Another early start for the thirds this week, with a 10.30 tip off against newly demoted Guinness. There was a lot of pressure to win this game from Coach Paul seeing as he plays for James gate, so we knew if we didn’t do well we would be getting it at training. So with the added pressure Paul also decided to make some positional changes to the team, lumping me into left mid out of the comfort of centre back and switching Niamh Ahern to centre back. The game started off pretty even for the first 5 minutes with both sides having attacking options, but it wasn’t long before Glenanne got a short corner, ball out to Sinead fired in deflected off my stick only to go marginally wide. That was ok though as not long after we got a free which found Sineads stick which she expertly brought into the circle and goal number 1. Glenanne kept this up and another short corner saw Katie bury the ball, then Gemma with some superb work got past the keeper for goal number 3, Sinead scored another, and then Cara, who was playing her first match for the Glens, sent in a cracker of a pass straight to me who managed not to mess it up and get it into the top of the net, that left the score 5-0 after 20 minutes. Sinead got another one in before half time, sorry have no recollection of what happened but it left the score 6-0 at half time.

The second half saw Guinness come out all guns blazing and they had some good passages of play and were unlucky not to get one as for a time the Glens defence got a bit scrappy, but with Catherine Kennedy in goals well they weren’t allowed!!  Gemma and Sinead gave a master class in how a centre mid and centre forward should play together with some great team work to get Sinead her 4th goal of the match and then the Glens 8th goal came from a short corner with Niamh Ahern getting it past the keeper. Final score 8-0 to the Glens and with goal difference looking like its going to play a big part in Division 10 this season it was important to get them in.

Well done to everyone who played and to those who didn’t let’s hope you’re well rested for next week when against Our Ladies everyone will need to be on their game. Also a big thanks for Catherine……… I am thinking she enjoyed Saturday so hopefully we can get her back for a few more games!!!!
