Ladies 2nd XI v Suttonians 19/11/2011
The seconds travelled to Sutton for the second time this season, eager to set the record straight after Sutton knocked them out of the division 3/4 cup in October. It was clear from the start the girls were up for the game. The Glens hard long periods of possession but the Sutton defence weren’t giving anything away easily. The Maunsel sisters threatened the Sutton keeper on numerous occasions, but the keeper held strong. The Glens first goal came from some good play on the left with Rachel Maunsel picking up the ball outside the circle, driving into the circle on her reverse, making way to goal, the ball landing to Marie Goulding at the back post, where she calmly slotted it in. The Glens led 1-0 at half time.
Some grounding words from Sid at half time, the girls came out eager to come home with three points. The Glens were on top again in the second half, holding possession again though some quick passing and spirited play. The Glens second goal came from a short corner which with some quick thinking from Kate O’Connor, the ball fell to Ciara Nugent on the left and side, who flicked the ball accros the goal to Marie Goulding in the correct place again who volleyed the ball into the back of the goal. The Glens 2-0 up now, seemed to settle and take take the foot off slightly, allowing Sutton back into the game. Sutton won a corner on the break, a direct strike from the top, which took a deflection off Suttons pitches “sweet” spot, raised unexpectedly into the goal. The score line now 2-1 the Glens found there composure, with time ticking away and numerous injury stoppages the Glens looked to maintain possession and secure the three points. Final score 2-1 to Glenanne. The 2nds now top the table, and are playing third position Swords next weekend in Glenanne.
