Ladies 1sts V Corinthians Saturday 17th Sept
Hard Slog pays off
Starting off their league battle with an away game against Corinthians was always going to be a tough begining for the ladies firsts. With a few major changes to the squad from last season with additions of Lucy Small (Trinity), Kitty Murray and Cathy Brock (Bray) strenghtening the team with each line benefitting from one of the new players. Kitty Murray stepping into the shoes of sweeper and establishing a new partnership with our very own Niamh Ward who will undoubtably draw the fans out in their droves again this season, accepting a new role as centre back. Cathy Brock steps into the midfield along with Maoliosa Nugent who will be supporting Audrey McCormacks flanks as she retains her centre mid role. Lucy Small bringing some power and pace to the front line sets this tie up to be an indication of things to come.
The first half allowed the Glens to immediately assert their dominance on this game, however against the run of play and aided by some confusion at the back Corinthians managed to draw first blood, finding one of two unmarked players on the back post. This seemed to spur the ladies in green into action equalising shortly after with a fine bit of individual flare from Audrey McCormack getting a superb reverse touch on a corner strike to send the ball onto the backboard bringing parity to the game. The Glens capitilised from the ascendency in this game with another score shortly after with a back post finish from Aiofe Dalton to put the Ladies into pole position going into the half time break.
The second half unfortunately descended into a lacklustre affair. There were a couple of cards shown and the pace of the first half took its toll on the performance in the second with Corinthians killing the game. The only highlights of the second half was some solid defence from the back 4 keeping the score at 2-1 to the glens and securing the first 3 points of the season.
Man of the match: Niamh Ward
