Match Report: vs Genesis (Ladies 3rd XI)
The Ladies 3rds headed back to UCD again this week, but this time to face Genesis, a back fixture from the snow. Following on from a 1-1 draw v North Kildare & a 4-1 victory over UCD in a double weekend last week, the girls were eager to get more points on the board. The plan at the start of the game seemed like a good one, but within 10 minutes, grouchy manager from the sideline was having a kiniption, the girls weren’t playing well, mistakes were being made, but the rub of the green was with the Glens and some great work down the wing by Niamh Mc saw Sinead Aherne put the girls 1-0 ahead, I’m still not sure how, but the Glens short corner routine was not affected by our lack of energy, a few stonking short corners put the Glens ahead with Jane Salter finishing sublimely. With a few minutes to go to the end of the first half, Niamh McCarthy made it 3 – 0 at half time.
I can guarantee you, no-one felt like we were leading 3 nil at half time, Genesis hockey was strong, it just seemed like luck wasn’t on their side, with some fine saves from Catherine, it made for a great scoreline regardless of the hockey played. The grouchy manager was still grouchy, and with a rather stern talking to & a request to drag the cobwebs of each other, the 3rds started the second half with a few fleas in their ears. Their hockey in the second half was just superb, the girls worked with each other, moved the ball well, found the space & started to make Genesis sweat. The scoreline improved for the Glens with two fine goals from Sinead Aherne & Niamh Aherne (sisters have to out do each other). Genesis almost pulled one back, but after consultation with the captains & 2 umpires, the goal was disallowed & the scoreline read 5 -0 full time.
So a brutal first half with 3 goals, a superb second half with 2 goals, 3 valuable points for the girls, Brid Holohan once again Man of the Match, the grouchy manager was grouchy no more!
