Glenanne Hockey Club

Match Report: vs Annadale (IHL)

Glennane travelled north in need of a bonus point win to keep apace with pool toppers Corinthian and achieved it by the slimmest of margins.

Glenanne started the livelier finding a lot of joy down the right hand side but were unable to find the finishing touch needed. They took the lead from their second corner of the game, Shane O’Donoghue converting with a drag flick.

Annadale were a constant threat on the break and they made Glenanne pay when possession was squandered and a left wing cross was deflected via Stephen Doran’s helmet high into the goal by Andy Williamson. Glennane had a corner on the half time hooter but were unable to convert leaving it all square at the break.

And it was Annadale who took the lead straight after half time, John Edgar cutting inside from the left and slipping under the advancing Doran.

Glennane continued to probe and took the lead after 50 minutes when an Eddie O’Malley double within a minute put them 3-2 ahead. The first was a back post tap in after great work from David Keogh. Jonathon Kane turned provider for the second, finding O’Malley on the top of the circle who swiveled onto his reverse and fired low past the Annadale Keeper.

A yellow card for Joe Brennan had Glennane on the back foot for the remainder of the quarter but it was during this time that Glennane got their fourth. Gary Shaw’s shot hit a foot on the line and O’Donoghue converted the stroke via both posts.

Glenanne entered the final quarter needing another goal to secure the bonus point and it arrived on 60 minutes, O’Malley playing a one two with Graham Shaw and placing his shot through the keeper’s legs to complete his hat trick.

Glennane played out the remainder of the game without incident to leave Carryduff with the full 4 points. With one game to go in the pool, a win on Saturday against Cookstown in Glennane Park should see Glenanne advance to the IHL Finals Weekend.

Next up for Glennane is the Leinster Cup Final against Monkstown on St. Patrick’s Day at Grange Road.
