Men’s Seconds win on the double

It was a satisfying weekend for the Men’s seconds as they prepared for their big Irish Junior Cup game against Annadale next weekend.

A trip to Grange Road on Saturday to face Rovers ended with the right result but Glens made hard work of it. A litany of chances were missed by several culprits and although Clive Kennedy gave his side the lead on the stroke of half-time from a second phase short corner, the seconds still remained vulnerable to a Three Rock suckerpunch.

James Murtagh had to be on his toes in goal to secure a cleansheet and ultimately the points as the game finished 1-0.

The next day they took on Railway in Park Avenue with a closer version of their Irish Junior Cup side although Devin Kehoe (Injury), Stephen Brownlow and John Stewart (Unavailable) were all missing.

The visitors started quickly as Matthew Lucas pushed wide and Clive Kennedy saw his reverse stick shot saved. Mark Keppel failed to find a way past the goalkeeper soon after and the Kennedy did, but rattled the crossbar instead.

Union then scored on a counter-attack, taking advantage of a slight over-committal from the Glens rearguard. It remained like that until half-time but you felt it was only a matter of time before Glenanne found their scoring touch.

Fred Van Der Weij equalised soon after half-time with a deflection off a dubious short corner. The next corner reaped another goal but in unconventional fashion as Alan Mcloughlin took a miss-push from Clive Kennedy and buried it for the lead.

Cillian O’Neill scored the goal of the game to double the lead as he collected a pass from Johnny Kehoe on the right-hand sideline before beating two players and smashing home a reverse stick strike. Kennedy finished the scoring with a fine finish over the netminder and a corner deflection which trickled over the line.
