Glenanne Hockey Club

Match Report: vs Trinity (Ladies 1st XI)

A game that the ladies needed to win to assert their stamp on the division one table started with Glenanne totally dominating possession and territory. Even with these distinct advantages, the Glens once again failed to capitilise on their dominance, even though Paula Fitzpatrick had some super runs upfront and plenty of chances that went a begging with only inches saving the Trinity team from falling heavily behind early on. Then disaster struck as Trinity were awarded a controversial short corner with their first entry into the Glens circle which they managed to get past a logging Sue Byrne to score a relatively soft goal. The Glenanne ladies continued to dominate without any reward for their labours. Against the run of play Trinity entered the Glenanne circle for the second time in the game and managed to score another well worked goal. The half ended with the ladies being 2-0 behind.

The second half saw the same level of dominance from the Glens, this time receiving a plethora of short corners, however only one found its way to the backboard. A lovely Kate O`Connor strike found its way neatly into the trinity net. In the dying moments of the game some superb individual flare from Audrey McCormack and Mary Waldron, the latter finding the perfect pass to leave Rachel Maunsel with an open goal, spending a second longer to get the shot off allowed a trinity player to make a crucial stick tackle which surely could only end with a stroke however both umpires deciding that just a short corner would be awarded. The last play of the game saw another short corner go awry for the Glens, which was a fitting end to a day that just didnt go their way from start to finish.
