Match Report: vs Loreto (Qtr Final Leinster Senior Cup)
The ladies in green are notoriously poor performers at midweek match-ups. However they rose to the occasion in fine form, putting on one of their best performances this season against one of the top teams in the Leinster league. It was a cold and wet kick off at 8.15pm, which was soon forgotten with the high paced, tough affair that ensued. Loreto attacked from the get go and with some solid defending from Louise Kennedy and a fantastic save off the line from Jennifer Rynne, the Glens managed to keep them out of their goal mouth for the first quarter until a very skilful Cathy McKean robbed the ball and made no mistake in putting it into the net. The first half ended with that being the only difference between the sides.
The second half started with the Glens going on the offensive with some brilliant hard work from forwards, Bex O`Rielly and Paula Fitzpatrick, who seemed to cause the loreto defense some serious headaches. They were rewarded for their hard work shortly thereafter with a great strike from Paula Fitzpatrick from the top of the circle to send the ball into the bottom corner of the Loreto goal. The next period of the game was a tough one for the Glens defence but with some brilliant cover defending from Audrey McCormack, parity remained until 4 minutes to go, when Cathy McKean, a stand out performer for Loreto, once again wreaked havoc in the Glens circle eventually being awarded a penalty for her efforts. Susan Byrne once again come very close to being the super star of the game, picking the right side but unfortunately the strike was just too well placed. The game ended at 2-1 to Loreto who progress to the semi-finals.
