Glenanne Hockey Club

Glenanne Ladies 1 XI VS Pembroke 1 XI

Despite the weather that blustered around Glenanne park, the ladies firsts had a very important game ahead of them. A win vital in order to move further up the table, 3 points meaning alot to the ladies and plus 7 to young Nugent. The Glens ladies started extremely well for a change and were quick to get a reward. Some incisive running upfront from Rebecca O`Rielly and Paula Fitzpatrick saw a slew of short corners awarded. The first of which was sweetly struck by Kate O`Connor at the top of the circle, taking a slight deflection off a defenders foot to thump the backboard. O`Connor followed shortly after with a wonderful assist to put Dearbhla Kieran onto the scoreboard again. Great vision from O`Connor saw her find a crisp pass into the circle for a slight deflection from Kieran to put the Glens 2 goals up headin into the break.
The 2nd half saw the glens in a position they are not accustomed to, and once again failing to capitilise on their dominance. Pembroke only drew a handful of saves from the focused Byrne in the Glens goals, and one ball taken off the line by Louise Kennedy. With some great work upfront from Rachel Maunsel and solid support from midfielder Trish McGinley, who stood out returning from an injury ridden start to the season, the Glens couldnt extend their lead. Another solid performance from Maolisa Nugent playing all over the pitch saw Glens shut out any Pembroke problems.
It was reported that the many fans that turn out on a weekly basis were overheard saying that it was a big disappointment that Niamh Ward didnt even make a cameo as she is out injured and the champagne hockey they are accustomed to seeing from the glens lacked a certain fizz without her.
