Pembroke 3 – 4 Glenanne
Glenanne got back to winning ways in their first game after the Christmas break with a 4-3 win over EHL rivals Pembroke Wanderers at Serpentine Avenue.
Due to the National Team Training Camp both sides were shorn of players with the strength of the respective squads tested to the full.
Stephen Brownlow got the first of his ensuing hatrick within 2 minutes, Shane O’Donoghue robbing the ball before working an opening with Graham Shaw who found Brownlow to deflect past the Pembroke keeper.
And Brownlow doubled his team’s tally on the 10 minute mark, the ball worked around the field to right-back David Keogh to assist.
Gordon Elliott pulled one back from a near impossible angle, robbing the Glenanne defender before striking on his reverse to squeeze the ball into the goal from the baseline.
The two-goal margin was restored just before the break, a deserved lead from a slick, fast-paced break. Eddie O’Malley was the root, stealing at half way and playing a one-two with Graham Shaw before finding the sliding Brownlow on the back post.
Pembroke got back into the game shortly after half time with Elliott’s open-side shot into the sideboard. But Glenanne responded through Fred van der Weij when he tapped in following good work from O’Malley and O’Donoghue to create the chance.
Elliott’s completed his hatrick with a volley that made it a lively finish and Pembroke had an equalizing opportunity on the buzzer but Mick McGuinness charged down a corner while the rebound whizzed passed the post.
