Ladies 1XI VS Lurgan 1XI, ISC Round 2
The Glens ladies went into this tie as underdogs facing the Ulster league leaders. The Glens had the better start using the nerves to fuel some good hockey, however once again struggling to convert pressure into a lead. Lurgan had plenty of support from the sidelines and gave the Glens a few worries at the back. There was little to seperate the teams in the first half which ended at 0-0.
The second half proved a tough one as Lurgan saw one green and 2 yellow cards with the glens receiving one green. Even with the advantage of having to face only ten players for a good chunk of the second half, the Glens ladies could not find a way through the Lurgan defence. It was unfortunate when Lurgan received a dubious short corner decision against the run of play which resulted in a lovely strike from the top of the circle. Susan Byrne managed to get a touch but the powerful shot was not to be denied. Lurgan went ahead. Glenanne’s best passage of play began with some lovely deflection attempts from Rebecca O`reilly and Claire Shillington. The glens would`ve benefitted once again from some patient umpiring when a goal was to be denied by an early blow for a short corner. The following short corner once again not going to plan.
Lurgan caught the Glens on the break late in the second half to score their second goal of the day. Guy Garrett made the call to replace Goalie Sue Byrne with an extra outfield player which saw the glens totally dominate the dying minutes of the game however it proved too little too late for the Glens as their ISC journey ended as the final whistle blew. Kate O`Connor received Glens for her efforts at the back.
