Glenanne Hockey Club

Ladies 1sts VS Loreto 1sts, 15th Jan

Glenanne started the game with a few changes to their starting line up, with Maolisa Nugent fitting into the defensive back four and Paula Fitzpatrick starting off her game in the midfield. The game started off with the Glens dominating an extremely strong Loreto team however pressure did not convert into goals and unfortunately resulted in 2 counter attack goals within the first half. The ladies had an inspiring first half performance, which the goal line did not reflect, with some solid tackling from Nugent who slotted smoothly into the role of left back.
The second half saw glenanne return to their usual starting line up with the arrival of Kate O`Connor. Loreto started the second half with more determination and managed to put another goal on the scoreboard when the Glenanne defence were left wrong footed by some speedy forward and midfiled interchanging. The Glens now 3-0 down came back firing and scored a truly brilliant team goal which originated once again from Louise kennedy. Louise reacted quickly from a free and sent the perfect ball into the Loreto circle where Aiofe Dalton`s quick vision found Claire Shillington on the far post to power the shot home, leaving the Loreto keeper with no chance. This goal saw the Glens first since their promotion to division one against this strong Loreto outfit. It proved a flash of brilliance though as Loreto scored 2 more counter attack goals to end the game game at 5-1. Spectators, opposition and the Glens realised that this was not reflective of a much closer game however Loreto were much more clinical with their chances and their experience was the deciding factor on the day.
