Hard Slog Pays for Ladies 1st

Glenanne Ladies 1st  VS Corinthian 1st                                                                                                           Saturday 23/10/10

The ladies firsts had something to prove after a rocky start to the season, playing away against Corinthian always proves a hard task. Both teams started the game with alot of fight and the first half ended on even terms at 0-0, although the Glens had some very good chances from open play and short corners. Paula Fitzpatrick and Aoife Dalton working tirelessly upfront with a number of chances thwarted by the Corinthian keeper, who was having a great game. The stand out player of the first half was newcomer Claire Shillington with some decisive running up front, creating gaps in the Corithian defence. Glenanne’s defence held steadfast throughout the first half and special mention must be made of the short corner defensive team as they seem to be as solid as a rock, keeping everything that was thrown at them out of the goals.

The second half proved to be a scrappy affair with Corinthian tiring considerably and the game resorting to a dog fight with 2 green cards and 1 yellow for the Corinthian side. Dearbhla Kieran was rewarded for her hard work scoring a fine team goal. The move originated from Kate O’Connor and moved up the right hand side of the pitch with Rebecca O’Reilly ably carrying it along the end line to put the ball back across the goal for Dearbhla to finish into an open goal. The score remained 1-0 with some wonderful defence from Mary Waldron, Louise Kennedy and newcomer Jen Rynne who were all outstanding on the day, being well marshalled by Susan Byrne who, after a fantastic start to the season, deservedly gets her first clean sheet of the season.

This result gives the ladies their first win of the season, and after a wonderful performance against Hermes the week before, which didn’t result in points which were richly deserved, they will now be heading into future matches with some confidence. Congratulations to Audrey McCormack for receiving Man of the Match for the game against Hermes and to Dearbhla Kieran for receiving the honour for the Corinthian game.
