Glens can’t skin the Cats

Dave McDonnell’s men’s third side are still waiting to collect their first points of the season but if last Saturday’s performance against Kilkenny is anything to go by they should not be long waiting.

Kilkenny – a side capable of promotion – ran out comfortable enough 3-1 winner but Glens played more intricate hockey than the week before against Naas.

Glens went behind for the second week running and once again it was a short corner that was their undoing.

Emmet Hughes struck the post with his initial effort and Karl Crosbie managed to save the rebound but Kilkenny forward Adam Lynas finished at the third time of asking.

The lead was doubled midway through the half when Lynas capitalised on a mistake from McDonnell to fire high into the net.

Glenanne’s best chances came from an Alan Mclouglin break down the left-hand side and a short corner which David O’Malley found Cillian O’Neill but the midfielder pulled the ball away as Zane Cashman was about to finish.

However, they did get the perfect start to the second half as Matthew Lucas slalomed his way through ‘The Cats’ rearguard before pushing home.

The visitors pushed on for an equaliser but left themselves vulnerable at the back and Kilkenny finished the tie with a short corner a couple of minutes from time.

Glenanne: Karl Crosbie, David O’Malley, Dave McDonnell, Paul Byrne, Rhys Coleman, Alan Mcloughlin, Cillian O’Neill, Zane Cashman, Matt Lucas, Mark Keppel, Stephen Callaghan, Carl Matthews.
